The summer solstice is the lingering sun – the longest day of the year. One of my favourite flows in celebration of this time of year is a Sun Salutation; a mix of poses flowing together to celebrate and greet the warmth and life-force of the sun and our souls. If you don’t have a favourite one of your own, maybe try the below sun salutation this solstice!

Summer Solstice yoga flow

  1. Stand at the top of your mat with your hands at heart-centre with big toes together and ankles slightly apart. 
     
  2. Inhale. Bend your knees and sink your glutes towards the mat for Chair. Sweep your arms forward and up to either side of your ears. 
     
  3. Exhale. Hinge forward to bring your chest to your thighs for Standing Forward Fold.
     
  4. Inhale. Lengthen your spine to lift halfway. Standing Half Forward Fold.
     
  5. Exhale. Walk, step or jump your feet to the back of the mat into Plank. Bend your elbows and lower your chest towards the floor into Low Plank.
     
  6. Inhale. Flip your feet and extend your elbows to press your thighs away from the mat. Turn your gaze upward for Upward-Facing Dog.
     
  7. Exhale. Flip your feet and press your tailbone towards the sky into Downward-Facing Dog.
     
  8. Inhale. Extend your left leg towards the sky into Three-Legged Dog. Exhale. Step your left foot forward between your hands and turn your right foot out to about 45 degrees. 
     
  9. Inhale. Elevate your torso and sweep your arms up to either side of your ears into Warrior I.
     
  10. Exhale. Place your hands on either side of your left foot. Step your left foot to the back of the mat and elevate your hips into Downward-Facing Dog.
     
  11. Inhale. Turn your gaze forward and walk step or jump to the top of the mat. Keeping your fingertips on the mat or your shins, lengthen your spine to lift halfway. Standing Half Forward Fold.
     
  12. Exhale. Hinge forward to bring your chest to your thighs for Standing Forward Fold.
     
  13. Inhale. Stand up tall and sweep your arms up to bring your hands together above your head. Extended Mountain.
     
  14. Exhale. Lower your hands to heart centre.

Repeat this sequence, stepping forward into Warrior I with your right leg. You can use the images above as a guide throughout the whole flow!

Sun Salutations are a great movement to invigorate the body. Both Chair and Warrior I energise the blood through the legs and toes, while also opening our chest and heart to bring in the light of summer. Make sure your core is engaged while doing this sequence to create strength and stability, especially in your Forward Folds to protect your lower back.

This is the perfect day to connect yourself with the earth, to celebrate summer and everything your body can do.
